In her first full-length collection, Glass writes poems of heartfelt immediacy about the sufferings of the world, such as “Egypt,” actually set in Kenya, where she is followed by glue-sniffing beggar boys whose “story / abides with [her] still, red and alive.” Another poem of moral reckoning is “Rohingya,” where the poet on an ordinary day of “slicing mushrooms, onions, garlic,” confronts ethnic cleansing as “the horror and the beauty are two sides of a page / in a story the ending of which [she] cannot know.” Glass should be commended for traveling the harder road of ambivalence rather than the easier one of righteous platitude. “Songs of Sorrow and Rejoicing,” among the best in the collection, takes us to Gaza 20 years before the current war, but instead of dwelling on hopelessness and despair, affirms the Palestinian people’s resilience as we hear the camps’ five-year-olds chant “Gaza is liberated.” Readers will surely be uplifted by Glass’s assured voice, graceful language, and measured convictions. —Orlando Ricardo Menes, author, The Gospel of Wildflowers & Weeds
