Giovanni Antonio Canal (* 7 October 1697 in Venice; † 19 April 1768), called Canaletto, was an important Italian Vedutisti and landscape painter.Three years after starting to work with his father, in 1719, Canaletto traveled with Bernardo Canal to Rome to paint the decorations of Scarlatti's operas for a year. This journey was to prove crucial in his life since on this trip he became acquainted with the work of Giovanni Paolo Pannini, a great painter of the time, a follower of the Vedutisti movement, who specialized in large-scale landscapes and classical ruins. During his stay in Rome, he met various landscape painters and began to paint urban scenes.Between the years 1740 and 1741, he made a journey along the River Brenta during which he created numerous paintings. In the 1740s he begins to vary his technique and begins to use a loose and imprecise brushstroke. His colors stop being dark and he starts using light, gold, red, and other bright colors that give the painting great luminosity.In 1746 Canaletto moved to England to work until his return to Venice in 1755. His move to England had been forced in part by the war of Austrian succession.After returning to Venice in 1756, he was appointed a member of the Venetian Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1763. The technique of his last years is characterized by an unelaborated, superficial style and by the repetition of landscapes in a systematic way. His remains rest in Venice.
