Beschreibung
Lanzarote, the most north-easterly of the Canary Islands, is shaped by volcanism and its proximity to the Sahara. Flora, fauna and man had to adapt to these adverse conditions, and thus, unique biological phenomena have evolved here. Only here, blind colourless deep-sea crabs can be found living at the sea surface.Lanzarote owes the conservation of the island¿s specific character to the artist César Manrique. So far, the negative impact of mass tourism has largely been prevented. The nature of this island has been made accessible in an ecological and artistically sensitive way. In 1993, Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reservation. In face of rising visitor numbers, further efforts are necessary to ensure harmony between man and nature. Here is hope, that the label of Biosphere Reservation will drive ahead an ecologically sustainable development for Lanzarote.
