Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940) photographic work is related to immigrants and the working class. Having studied in Chicago and New York, he became a teacher of geography at the private Ethical Culture School in New York. An assignment to teach photography as well led him to that medium in 1903. In his free time he visited the impoverished immigrants on Ellis Island. In 1908 Hine gave up teaching and became a professional photographer. His photographs from Ellis Island are highly significant documents concerning immigrants from a wide range of cultures. In the aftermath of World War I, Hine focused his attention upon images of people engaged in productive work. One of his most famous photographs is from this period: "The Construction of the Empire State Building". This volume presents a selection of photographs chosen from among nearly 11,000 negatives. It celebrates one of the great pioneers of documentary photography who left his mark in subsequent generations of photographers.
