If you want to put together a PC, or improve one you've already got, you need good advice from an expert. Thank goodness for Ian Sinclair. This book is a form of manual that covers the construction of a PC, either from scratch or following the more common method of buying a low-cost machine and improving it as required. It will also serve as a useful reference text for users of all machines that can be described as generic (those very closely compatible with the IBM AT design). If your low-cost PC comes with a manual that can be politely described as rudimentary, this book is for you. If you are building from scratch or from a kit, this is your basic guide. Another route which is now common is to buy machines that have been discarded by government or corporate users simply because they are not the most recent models. These machines can be found at auctions or sales, often at very low prices. The aim of this book is to provide information for anyone taking any of these routes, because no manual will be available. The book is also designed to be used by newcomers and experienced users alike, either in computing or electronics. Finally this book is also intended as a reference for anyone who is updating a machine, either a minor update such as replacing a disk drive, or a major update such as replacing a motherboard. Since the effects of construction and upgrading cannot be judged without the essential software, the basics of using MS-DOS and Windows are also included, along with a chapter on printers and other connections.
