Beschreibung
This volume explores the life in the German colony of Qingdao as seen through private letters, diaries and memoirs of German residents. The study examines perceptions of the colonised physical space, the understandings of the self in connection with cultural practices like drinking, clothing, living and leisure and the view of the Chinese Other. This detailed analysis is based on the hypothesis that Germans in Qingdao demonstrated their position of power through a largely 'closed' concept of "Heimat", which was reflected in the creation of a known space and in the reproduction of familiar lifestyles. This in turn resulted in minimal engagement with Chinese culture and customs. von Groeneveld, Sabina
