For a long time, the main focus of interest in Ludwigstein Castle was historical research into the role of the castle in the history of the German youth movement, the history of its ideas and organisation and the history of reform movements and progressive education. This was fostered by the Archive of the German Youth Movement, which was founded in 1922. By contrast, no attempt has been made to integrate the specific history of the castle into the more general history of the youth movement otherwise be of benefit to the movement; there is also a lack of fundamental discussion about the development and utilization of the castle from the 15th to the early 20th century in its regional and territorial context. To encourage future studies, this volume presents some preliminary research results.
