Beschreibung
Here are some examples of how you can tempt your friends to accept attractive-looking bets. But mathematical analysis shows that these bets are unfair. Mathematical tricks and curiosities are presented like: the magic number 70 in exponential growth; how to estimate the birth-and mortality rate in your town; why the best team does not always win; the famous TV-Show of Monty Hall with the car and the two goats behind three doors; the story behind the fairy tales of the 1'001 Arabian nights; why the last judgment occurs in 800 years; etc. Finally there is a long list of easy and difficult riddles. von Joho, Werner

Über den Autor
Werner Joho was born1938 in Baden, Switzerland. Like Einstein, he attended the cantonal high school in Aarau, and went on to study physics at ETH, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Over the years the author has collected many mathematical curiosities, a selection of which are published in this booklet. Many chapters should be of interest not only to specialists but to general readers as well. As a hobby the author and two ETH colleagues developped a computer chess program, which played in 1968 a historic live game over the Atlantic via ham radio with a computer program at MIT in Boston. The American program won after 41 moves.
